  • Essay / Intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention...

Across the world, computer networks are becoming more and more popular as more and more technologies are implemented in organizations in order to help employees process their work and communicate with each other. Along with the continued growth of technology, there is an increasing risk of theft or loss of data and information by hackers attempting to gain access to an organization's networks. There are many systems that will help detect and alert an organization to attacks or prevent attacks from occurring. Systems known as Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) do just that for an organization and when combined they are called Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS). Intrusion detection system and intrusion prevention systems are what help an organization know about an attack in progress or about to take place and help them identify bad activities on the network. According to Webopedia (2014), “an intrusion detection system inspects all incoming and outgoing network activity and identifies suspicious patterns that may indicate a network or system attack by someone attempting to penetrate or compromise a system . » The intrusion prevention system is the system that can detect a possible intrusion, then prevent it from occurring and attack the organization with an active response. Intrusion prevention is what stops an attack from taking place and detection is about the systems and processes that identify attacks (Mattord & Whitman, 2013, p. 283). One type of intrusion detection prevention system is the network-based system. This type of system is located on a computer or device connected to the organization's network...... middle of paper ...... implements a style that best fits the system. Security will always be necessary in all organizations to protect data and information from corruption, loss or theft. Ultimately, IDPS are there to prevent problems, identify attacks, and track attacks that cannot be avoided or detected by other security tools or measures. Works CitedMattord, H., Whitman, M. (2013).
