Essay / All Actions Have Consequences - 1545
According to Dictionary.com, karma is defined as “the cosmic principle by which each person is rewarded or punished in one incarnation based on his or her actions in the previous incarnation; fate; destiny;" therefore, a person's actions, whether positive or negative, will result in reward or punishment in the future. Nevertheless, the characters in the novels of Voltaire and HG Wells undoubtedly believe that they are capable of conducting an experiment that will alter the future, without knowing that something similar to what many call "karma" will come to haunt their actions. In Candide, a "burning" or "act of faith" is accomplished, au during which individuals who committed a crime against the Roman Catholic Church are publicly punished. Hoping to prevent future earthquakes in Lisbon, the Portuguese put several individuals on public display, only to have the earth destroyed. trembles later in the day Similarly, in The Island of Doctor Moreau, Doctor Moreau, himself, experiments with vivisection, or living dissection of an animal without medication. Much to his dismay, however, the “humans. » newly configured ones quickly deteriorate and revert to their animal state. Ultimately, as can be inferred from the novels Candide and The Island of Doctor Moreau, the deformation of living bodies is used as a means of altering the future; however, expectations of these actions prove counterproductive. Whether one considers the decision idiotic or logical, a Portuguese university has ruled that the best way to avoid future environmental risks is to damage living bodies. Today, scientists understand that earthquakes are natural and will occur regardless of human interference; however, this science is almost only a recent middle of paper......e of living bodies and inflicting harm and destroying the body in order for a higher power to achieve a specific future goal. In Portugal, bodies were publicly injured as a theoretical punishment to prevent any damage to the city in the future. Likewise, Dr. Moreau altered and distorted various species of animals through vivisection to create a permanent human figure and a new discovery in the scientific world. Ultimately, however, the two actions taken in each novel produced similar counterproductive results: an earthquake occurred later that same day in Portugal, and Moreau's animal-human species vivisected quickly returned to her animal self. So, as the famous saying goes, “what goes around comes around”; Perhaps our best bet for a better vision of the future should consider this abstract idea of karma and the consequences of our actions..
