Old Order Amish vs Modern Mennonites Going to the local market we can see that there are all kinds of people with different skin color, hair color, heritage and different beliefs. A few subcultures that many have seen, but are not very familiar with are the Old Order Amish and Modern Mennonite cultures. The fraternities of the Amish Protestant Christian Church are closely related to the Mennonites but also have some of their own distinctions. The Amish can be found throughout the United States, however, the vast majority of them immigrated from Switzerland to Pennsylvania. “The Amish Church began with a schism in Switzerland among a group of Swiss and Alsatian Anabaptists in 1693 led by Jakob Ammann. Those who followed him became known as the Amish.” (Amish, 2014) When the Amish settled in Pennsylvania, they acquired a Pennsylvania German language, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch. Amish culture is a growing culture in the United States. The Amish were saved from extinction by William Penn who allowed them to reside against religious persecution in America. William Penn was one of the founders of Pennsylvania. He believed deeply in religious freedom and wanted to create a place almost like a refugee where people could escape the cruelty faced by different religions. Although the largest Amish population is believed to reside in Pennsylvania, in reality Ohio has the largest Amish population in the United States and Canada and currently no Amish live in Europe. The Amish are very spiritual people and have a lifestyle of living off their income. the land given to us without using any of the modern equipment we have today. Modern society may not agree with all of its beliefs, but that is why they are called beliefs. We each have our own set of beliefs in life and the Amish and Mennonites have found ways in which they can each achieve greatness. They take their spiritual actions and put them into their daily lives by being hardworking and faithful individuals..
