Essay / 1900-1945 history - 1434
Canada has been shaped by the historical influences of the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, the Dirty 30s and the Second World War; lay the foundations of the society we live in today. World Was 1 had a big impact on Canada because it started the process of giving women rights and showing people that they can do the same jobs as men. The Roaring Twenties and the Dirty 30s had a great effect on the country because people moved from a state of high luxury in the 1920s to a state of no luxury in the 1930s. When World War II world broke out, people got jobs and money so they could buy back everything they had lost during the depression. World War I began when the Archduke and Archduchess were killed during a visit to Serbia. The Austro-Hungarian government blamed Serbia for the deaths. They sent an ultimatum to Serbia. An ultimatum is a demand by one government to another to accept its conditions or face war. Austria-Hungary wanted Serbia to 1) suppress all hatred against it. 2) Punish all those involved in the assassination plot. 3) Allow Austro-Hungarian officials to enter Serbia to help crush the Black Hand. The Serbs accepted all conditions except the last one. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 6, 1914. Russia, Serbia's ally, began to mobilize its troops. France, Russia's ally, also began to mobilize its forces. Germany feels threatened by France and Russia and therefore asks them to stop mobilizing. When they did not, Germany declared war on Russia on August 1, 1914, and on France the next day. Germany planned to attack France via Belgium, a neutral nation. Britain had promised Belgium that it would protect them if it was ever invaded. So when Belgium was invaded, Britain declared that it was against Germany. Canada was part of the British Empire and was automatically at war. At first, everyone wanted to go to war. They thought it would be over in a few months. Since the country produced so many supplies for the war, everyone had work and money. People were going out and buying brand new cars and houses. They bought things they would never have bought before the war. Since most men were fighting, women had to do the work that men usually did. They even won the night to vote for the Wartime Elections Act. Without World War I, it might have taken a long time for women to gain the right to vote. The war ended in the middle of the paper camps. By the end of the war, Hitler had killed more than a million Jews. In Canada, everything was fine. People found work making war equipment and they had some money. As in World War I, women had to go to work and get supplies for the war. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the government began placing all Japanese people in internment camps. They were getting rid of everything they owned, so when they came out, they had nothing. In July 1945, the President of the United States told Japan to surrender or be destroyed. When they did not surrender, the Americans dropped an atomic bomb on them. But they did not surrender and so dropped another bomb on Japan. Eventually, Japan surrendered and the war was over. Without the influences of the First World War, the 1920s and 30s and the Second War..
