Due to today's technological advancements, it is very easy to track the activities or movements of any person. If a politician did something underhanded, unethical, or morally questionable, other people could easily find out, tarnishing his or her reputation. A tarnished reputation will then make it difficult for him to exercise power because people will lose confidence in him. For example, during the 2012 presidential elections, Paul Ryan was caught in a scandal because he volunteered at a soup kitchen. Paul Ryan and his family visited a soup kitchen and claimed they were there to help the soup kitchen by serving customers. However, it was later revealed that Ryan and his family came over after the customers had been served and only donned white aprons to take photos of them doing the dishes to show their volunteer activity to help the poor. The candidacy of Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney took a major blow due to this controversy, as many of their supporters were angry over such a questionable act.
