Essay / Hook-Up Culture - 968
The expansion of the “hookup” era on college campuses has increased significantly in recent years. In the book Hooking Up – Sex, Dating, and Relations on Campus, Kathleen A. Bogle explores the new sexual culture through real-life stories and interviews with college-aged students. Once focused on the initial concept of the “vocation” scenario, many young people chose to adopt this “connection” scenario. In this article, I will define the concept of “connection,” explore the social forces behind its emergence, and present the many connections between gender and expectations for social behavior today. Over the past few years, the exact definition of the term "hookup" has left many people puzzled. According to Bogle, the reason is that the definition of the term can be different for each person. According to an interview with Tony, a state university graduate, the term "sexual intercourse" can be defined by many as "having sex." Others, like his interview with Trent, may reveal that the term also refers to something less than sexual intercourse, such as "kissing" or "kissing." After Boyle's research, she can conclude: "You can't be sure what someone means when they say they had sex unless you ask a follow-up question to see what the sexual activity. » As a senior at a public state university, I would define the term "sexual intercourse" as referring to the commission of a sexual act with another person based on my experiences at the university. This includes any form of sexual intercourse, but excludes acts such as kissing. The fluidity of this term allows the defining properties of "hookup" to cover a broad spectrum of sexual and non-sexual relationships...... middle of paper ......e country. As we have seen throughout the reading, defining the concept of "hookup" has proven to be a difficult task that can only be accomplished on an individual basis. Exploring the social forces of its emergence and the many connections between gender and expectations for social behavior today has made me well-informed on the subject of hookup culture. From the information provided during his interviews with students, Bogle allows the reader to glean a clear perspective of those in the hookup culture. I think his interpretation and method of introducing hookup culture and the many factors surrounding this new sexual era are not only very relevant in today's society, but also for future generations.
