Radiology technology, a rapidly expanding field of work, has recently seen an increase in availability and job opportunities. In 2012, 229,300 radiology technologist jobs were available, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook. This number is expected to increase by 21% by 2022. With only an associate's degree required for entry-level radiology positions and a median salary of $55,910, this position is quickly becoming a popular job option. Higher demand for radiology technologists is also occurring due to longer lifespans, creating an increased market for certain types of diagnostic imaging. “As the population ages, there will be an increase in health problems, such as breaks and fractures caused by osteoporosis, which may require imaging to diagnose” (“Radiology and MRI…”). With advances in technology and longer lifespans due to more detailed and accurate medical understanding, the field of radiology is a growing field of work that requires minimal training and optimal entry salary. The entry-level salary for an MRI technician can range from $65,000 to $89,000. The minimum education required to enter the field of radiology is an associate's degree. If a higher salary is desired, an advanced degree may be pursued.
