Introduction to Indian English Literature:English, a language of international status, is particularly remarkable for its flexible and variable character. When read and spoken, it is not tied to typical English conventions or the social, cultural and literary context of different countries. On the other hand, it is subject to the dominant influence of the cultural and social context of the countries concerned. The geographical, climatic, social and cultural conditions prevailing in a country have determined the character of written and spoken English. Nowadays, English does not belong only to the English. It has become the cultural and literary heritage of humanity. Americans have done much to transform the English idiom and modes of expression and have successfully adapted it to the expression of their national character and temperament. Therefore, an American's English is different from that of an Englishman. Likewise, the English of African, Australian and Arab countries is informed by national denominations. This is why we have seen the black consciousness movement in English literature written by black people. They are deeply aware of racial and color discrimination and have made English an appropriate medium to express their grievances and the evils of apartheid. In India too, English has been shaped and transformed to express the various phases of Indian cultural, social and cultural life. Literary context. It was used to spontaneously and powerfully express the different shades of emotions, thoughts and feelings typical of the Indian character. Therefore, the English of an Indian writer is not the English of an English writer.
