EE Cummings is one of the most creative poets of modernist poetry of the 20th century. EE Cummings doesn't let traditional structure and diction limit his creativity. He is well known for his play with syntax, capitalization and punctuation also called typography. His word choices are powerful traits for his poems. He paints his poems using imagery effectively. “EE Cummings appreciates uniqueness and nature but dislikes conformity and artificiality” (Kennedy 1571). This attitude is reflected in his works. Although EE Cummings writes "I love my body when it's with yours" and "pity that busy, maunkind monster" with similar structure, excellent word choices and imagery; these two poems have opposite themes and tones. Their themes and tones affirm EE Cummings's appreciation for the nature and ingratitude of artificiality. “I love my body when it is with yours” and “I pity the monster of humanity” are written in the form of a sonnet of fourteen lines without iambic pentameter. Cummings uses his powerful play with syntax to effectively visualize his ideas in the structures of these poems. The structure of “I Love My Body When It's With Yours” visually mimics the slow-building excitement of lovemaking toward climax. The punctuation and line spacing cleverly reflect the pause and retreat in this love scene that Cummings is trying to paint. In “Pity the Busy Monster, Mankind,” the lack of spacing between words like “mountain range” and “where when” makes the progression of this comfortable illness he describes seem contagious. and unstoppable. The use of hyphens between two irrelevant sentences makes the speaker in this poem seem impatient. The phrase "a hopeless case if—listen" shows that the speaker middle of paper......is a busy monster, humanity” shows his love of nature and human uniqueness. All this creativity, typography and charming attitude towards love and nature made him one of the most successful poets of modernist poetry of the 20th century.
