To be supported by this layer, in addition to wear, the lower layer must only support a lesser magnitude of stress because there is no d direct wear from traffic loads, so lower quality material with lower cast iron can be used in the lower layers. A typical flexible pavement layout is given in Figure 1.2. Figure 1.2 Flexible pavement 1.2.2 Rigid pavement The rigid characteristics of the pavement are associated with the stiffness, resistance to bending or action of the slab, such that the load is distributed over a wide area of ground of foundation. The rigid roadway is laid in slabs with steel reinforcement. Rigid coverings are made of cement concrete, either reinforced concrete or prestressed concrete. The critical stress condition in rigid pavement is the maximum bending stress occurring in the slab due to wheel loading and temperature changes. The rigid pavement is designed and analyzed using elastic theory. A typical sketch of a rigid pavement is given in Figure 1.3. Figure 1.3 Rigid pavement.
