Although misogynistic themes are not new to the music industry, rap music in particular has caused significant outcry due to the lyrical and graphic exploitation of women in many of its songs. This study will focus on the subcategory of rap that contains the most misogynistic themes; “gangsta rap,” a term accredited to “Niggaz with Attitude,” or “NWA” (Schneider, 2011, p. 45), and how the lyrics can have detrimental effects on its listeners. However, even if these effects exist, it is important to ask whether censorship would have a substantial impact on our already misogynistic society and whether it would actually stop the production of sexist music. Gangsta rap normalizes misogyny by glorifying sexual objectification and abuse of women. . (Mackinnon, 1993). The use of offensive terms such as "slut" was once frowned upon, but has now become part of everyday language. (Schneider, 2011, p. 45). Popular rapper Eminem refers to women as “vile, venomous, volatile bitches” in his song “Kill You,” sending the message that this type of message is acceptable (Weitzner & Kubrin, 2009, p. 11). Not only is he misogynistic. Rap is a form of hate speech, but it can gender roles and create stereotypes. (Johnson, 1993-1994, p. 26) Impressionable young people may hear words encouraging male aggression toward women and act accordingly (Beatty, 2002). Male domination is a common theme in rap music. Researcher Alex Dobkin says that "some boys may not want to dominate, but feel they should, in order to fit in with the culture." And they have the music to back them up” (Adams and Fuller, 2006, p. 952). The effect on young women can also be disastrous, as their self-esteem can be compromised. Studies have found that the paper industry and its producers are the “toughest” in order to increase sales and make more money. Those who choose not to follow this path are often not accepted into the industry (Weitzner & Kubrin, 2009, p. 6). With this knowledge, we must ask ourselves whether rap music is the source of the problem and should be censored, or whether society's fascination with misogynistic lyrics has a deeper cause. However, if censorship were a viable option, it should be taken as promoting these values does not benefit the community, especially women. Even though it is ultimately almost impossible to censor rap music, it is still important that our society can recognize the harm that misogynistic themes can have on both men and women. A continued examination of rap lyrics and their themes is essential to uncover its true effects on our society..
