Essay / Morally Corrupt Characters - 818
Tom Buchanan is a lot like Daisy Buchanan in only looking out for himself. Tom is racist, arrogant and adulterous. Tom shows his racism very proudly and doesn't care who knows. For example, when Toms says, "Well, it's a good book and everyone should read it." The idea is that if we don’t pay attention, the white race will be completely submerged” (Fitzgerald 16). Tom Buchanan is very rude and looks down on people who are not of the same race as him. As the reader continues reading, they will see: “Later in the novel, during his argument with Gatsby, Buchanan uses “black-white intermarriage” as a sign of the decadence of various social and cultural institutions” (Lena 50). . . Tom doesn't respect people of different colors. Tom places himself on a high seat: "And not only is Tom unable to connect directly to the world of nature, but he is also incapable of connecting directly to others outside his class and race" (Lehan "Civilization's Going to Pieces” 86). Tom is very arrogant towards different races and people of different social positions. In the novel we can see: "Tom's violent attitudes towards those he deems inferior are not only evident in his encounters, but also through his sexist encounters with his wife Daisy and his mistress of the day, Myrtle Wilson, an aspiring social climber” (Tunc 72). ). Tom himself even said, “Just last year.” I went there with another girl” (Fitzgerald 38). This statement itself shows that Tom Buchanan is not a faithful husband to his beloved wife Daisy Buchanan. Once we see this, we realize: "So when we think of Tom Buchanan as an agent of power in this novel, we have to realize that the system of power that he is manipulating is one that has arrived at the end of a long line of varied power systems. » (Lehan "Civilizati...... middle of paper ...... ngs every Great Gatsby fan should know." 2013.
