Essay / freedom and sought equal civil and political rights. Black people enjoyed many privileges after the war, such as the right to vote, hold office, and go to school. Despite the privileges they had, state legislatures began passing “Black Codes,” which were restricted laws limiting opportunities for blacks in the South. White people did not respond well to the end of the Civil War/Reconstruction. They felt like everything they had had been taken away from them. Many families mourned the loss of loved ones and the destruction of their property. Racial hatred persisted and they did various things to try to protect their white supremacist.
