In this story we can see the symbolism of a cat to describe the deterioration of the marriage of a couple with different personalities and the love and compassion that the woman longs for. The story begins with George and his wife stuck in a hotel while it's pouring rain outside. The woman notices a cat hiding under a table, trying to avoid getting wet. She suddenly becomes obsessed with saving this cat. As the story progresses, the audience begins to learn more about the couple and their relationship. While the hotelier helps his wife by sending her an umbrella while she is out in the rain, treats her with the respect she deserves and eventually sends the cat to her door, George, the husband, ignores her wishes and treats her like she's an unimportant little girl. It can clearly be seen that the relationship is unhealthy and the woman is keeping her frustration to herself. The story features the theme of relationship problems, when one partner becomes dominant or repressive and the other tries to change and improve the situation. If the couple is aware of their problems, they may be able to save their marriage, but if not, the relationship may become increasingly gray and depressive, like the weather in the story. The story is written with a simplifying and easy vocabulary that is not difficult to understand, allowing readers to focus on the emotional side of the story. Throughout the story there are words in Italian. The quick transmission... middle of paper ... he realizes that someone cares about her; the padrone has made an effort to please him, and it is a flash of light in his sad and lonely life. The cat was not brought to him by the padrone himself; she is a married woman and such an act may seem arrogant. The maid comes into the room with the gift, a small gift that has a much deeper meaning; the servant holds the cat, “clasped against her and swung against her body”. Like a baby. Hemingway constructed the story in such a way that the reader sympathizes with the woman's need for warmth and affection, so that the ending brings peace and consolation not only to the woman, but also to the reader. The ending reiterates the message of the story; it has a flat plot with characters whose names we don't know, which makes the reader sympathize with him, regarding everyone's daily lives and concerns..
