  • Essay / Physical and Psychological Needs - 1334

What do you need?In nature, all living things have needs that must be met, physical and psychological needs. While other living things like animals have more physical needs, humans have both basic physical and psychological needs, which makes us different from them. The psychological necessities of a human are what make humanity what it is. We develop these needs from birth and throughout life; desires are used to represent our personality as human beings. These characteristics show our desire to grow, to feel safe, to feel a sense of security, and to feel loved. These essential elements have been greatly connected in literature such as Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. In Frankenstein, the creature Victor created is abandoned and left to fend for himself and has no idea what is happening or who he is. In nature, he develops a need for certain needs other than his physical needs. The creature tries to be accepted into society despite its hideous appearance. The creature wanted to reach humans by learning to speak and interact like one. The creature would also try to prove its worth to society by kindly helping others. In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, the creature is not recognized as a human but displays the characteristics of humanity through the psychological needs for growth, love, and contribution in which all humans express themselves to define themselves. Even if the creature is not considered human, it shows the psychological needs that all humans in society express today to define their species. One of the main human needs is the desire to grow. As the work of psychologist Chloé Madane explains, growth is “the need to grow, improve, and develop, both in character and in mind” (“The Six Human Needs” 4 ).
