The Gordon Model of Functional Health was proposed and developed by Marjory Gordon. This is the method used by the nurse to provide a comprehensive assessment of the client. Gordon's Functional Health Profile is divided into 11 categories. These categories provide a systematic and standardized approach to data collection. Each of the categories allows the nurse to determine different factors of human health and function. These categories are health perception and health management, nutrition and metabolism, urine and waste elimination, activity and exercise, cognition and perception, sleep and rest, self-perception and self-concept, roles and relationships, sexuality and reproduction, adaptation and stress tolerance. , and values and beliefs (Functional Health Patterns, 2005). The first category is health perception and health management. This model is linked to the client's vision of health and well-being. This also includes the client's knowledge of lifestyle, preventative health practices, and the client's compliance with medical advice. The data collected is focused on the client's perceived level of well-being and focuses on maintaining health. Smoking, alcohol use, recreational drug use, and other habits detrimental to the client's health are also included in this category. This category also focuses on managing the client's safety and health at home that may require modifications or for ongoing home care. An example subcategory for this model is risky health behavior. This would include the client's use of tobacco products, drugs, or alcohol (Koshar, ND). A question the nurse might ask is, "On average, how many alcoholic beverages do you drink per day?" » A nursing intervention for this would be for the nur...... middle of paper ...... the different functions of health. There are eleven categories that are systematic and used as a standardized approach to data collection. Each of the categories collects, validates, and organizes data about a client's state of well-being, functional capacity, physical status, strengths, and responses to actual and potential health concerns.
