A mentor can help promote a person's business goals and help them define those goals which will further guide them along their career path. Once this happens, Marciano (2014) stated, “a person must decide what type of relationship they want to have with a mentor and what they hope to learn from that mentor” (p. XX). There are a few steps a person should take when considering a mentor. Given the skills a person already has or the level they have reached, a mentor can help develop them. No matter what stage a person is at in their career, a mentor can guide you toward further development and planning. Taking the time to really understand what you need to improve will help you save time. This first step is therefore crucial in the planning phase. This is the blueprint for the entire mentor-mentee relationship. By making a plan of your expectations and what you need help and guidance with, it will be effective for you and your mentor. It will also serve as a basic guide for the entire mentor – mentee relationship. As your relationship grows, you can modify the plan and modify it as your needs evolve to personalize your growth.
