  • Essay / Judgment of Nick - 889

Nick is "inclined to reserve all his judgments" because "he is one of the few honest people I have ever known" according to himself. He only prevents his judgments from manifesting themselves to the people for whom he forms them. It is until the end of the story that he refrains from showing directly what he feels towards the other characters. During the tangle of affairs we read about Nick, he became embroiled in the two greatest powers in history. New York at the time. East Egg and West Egg, new money and old money throw our main character into a sad course of events that results in pain for everyone involved. Until the last part of his story, his thoughts about the others involved are mute to their ears as he is almost wary of speaking badly or rudely about others to their faces. When the situation begins to deteriorate, we see Nick showing resentment towards the old money people. He went so far as to want nothing to do with Jordan for a while. Tom is the biggest change at the end. Nick is respectful to Tom's face until after the funeral. He had had some pretty bad thoughts about Tom as a person, but after what he was sure Tom had done for Gatsby's murder, he began to feel less and less accepting of his position of having to show him some respect. Tom had made a man kill Gatsby and Nick knew it. So at the end, when Tom goes to shake hands, Nick refuses the gesture and leaves him without respect or courtesy in his actions. He hadn't seemed interested in trying to show his true feelings to any of them. They were above him in the social structure of society. He was tossed around according to the people who had met him. His cousin Daisy... middle of paper...... there was her involvement in the murder of her friend. His one meeting with Tom Buchanan allows us to see how different their meeting is from what it was before. Nick finally had the motivation to treat Old Money the way they deserved to be treated. Everyone who participated in this story passed judgment on someone else. Nick was different. He was different in the fact that he didn't openly express his feelings towards almost anyone, especially when his feelings towards another person were bad. In the end, that had changed. Nick would have felt less important than the other characters due to his lack of money compared to any of them. After their cruel treatment of Gatsby after his death, Nick saw them for who they are. Old Money, New Money, East Egg or West Egg were all no better than him and it took a tragedy for Nick to gain this knowledge.”.
