Essay / Two of Shakespeare's most successful comedies - 833
Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night are two of Shakespeare's most successful comedies. Some may say that the two poems are like day and night, very different from each other. But it will be proven to you that they are very similar. Shakespeare incorporates many strong elements of Much Ado About Nothing into Twelfth Night and vice versa. The characters also share common traits in both plays. The settings have a slight utopian feeling, as both worlds are based on Italy. Even the plots have great similarities as they are both based on love, power, wealth and marriage. First, the characters in both plays share many characteristics. There are people in power, poor people, bad people and stupid people. The Messina police force in Much Ado About Nothing is made up of unpaid citizens, with Dogberry and Verges as officers. They are very stupid and it seems like they were written into the play just to be stupid and make the audience laugh. This is similar to the role of Feste, the entitled fool, in Twelfth Night. However, Feste also sings songs to the family and has thrown an unpopular party. Sir Andrew Aguecheek can also be quite silly, for example he uses the word "it seems to me" in line 82 of Act 1, Scene 3; “It seems to me that sometimes I have no more intelligence than a Christian or an ordinary man. » Olivia and Hero can also be compared. They are the main characters of Twelfth Night and Much Ado About Nothing respectively. They are both young, female and live in vast homes with overflowing gardens. Throughout the plays, they both try to find a husband. Olivia, at the beginning of Twelfth Night, falls in love with Cesario, who is actually a girl, Viola, disguised to find work. But Olivia doesn't find out until the end...... middle of paper ...... garters. While Malvolio reads the letter in the gardens, Maria, Sir Andrew Aguecheek and Sir Toby Belch listen and laugh at how he falls in love. After that, Malvolio goes to see Olivia and is locked up in prison for acting like a crazy person. The endings of both plays follow a similar path; almost everyone is happy and full of joy. At the end of Twelfth Night, Sir Toby Belch and Maria get married and Malvolio is released from prison, covered in dirt and in a horrible situation. The end of Much Ado About Nothing ends with Hero and Claudio getting married and all the characters are outside, singing and dancing. We can therefore prove that Twelfth Night and Much Ado About Nothing are very similar Shakespeare plays. The years they were written, the plots of the stories, the characters, their traits and the settings used, all prove that they are very similar..
