Annotated BibliographySarah HamlinSubject: Bullying is misrepresented in the media and its definition is unclear. The study examines how children perceive bullying and how they differentiate bullying from teasing. It was understood that students often mistook teasing for bullying and mischaracterized it. They indicated that bullying is physical, mental, or emotional demoralization that occurs repeatedly and that teasing is verbal or physical aggression that is not necessarily repetitive. It has not been determined when teasing turns into bullying, but it is clear that the line between the two actions is blurred. The study shows that boys and girls conceptualize bullying and teasing as one and the same, even though they experience them differently. This source is useful for my article because it shows how the definition of bullying is unclear among today's students and is often mislabeled. A blind spot of this source is that it never provided a solution as to when teasing becomes bullying and vice versa. Another blind spot is that it does not target adults, and my article will focus on bullying in the media, which is run by adults. This chapter focuses on the differences in how Columbine High School was portrayed in the media and how the school actually was. According to reports, there was a lot of polarization between popular and outcast students and there were also reports that bullying was widespread in the school, based on the claims of a few students. In reality, everyone seemed to get along pretty well and bullying and cliques were no more common than at other schools. Because the shooters were wearing trench coats on the day of the shooting, media also reported that they were part of a "trench coat mafia"...... middle of paper...... different types, locations where it occurs, and the effects have been reported. On the parents' side, the frequency of harassment, its different types and its effects have been studied and reported. The frequency of bullying, different types of schools and methods of preventing bullying were also reported by teachers. Adult respondents were asked if they had been bullied as children and the long-term effects were reported. This source is useful for my article because it focuses on the opinions of students, teachers, parents, and adults, something no other survey has done. do. This is also useful because many of the same questions were asked of different categories of people with very different results, proving that there are discrepancies in how harassment is perceived by different people. A blind spot in the investigation is that it focused on the British, not the Americans..
