Is Dr Who telling us about science and technology or about the Britain of his time? Discuss.IntroductionDoctor Who was one of the most successful television series of all time. Produced by the BBC, it describes the adventures of a time-traveling humanoid alien, the Doctor, who, in his spaceship TARDIS, encounters different times, places and parts of the universe (Leach, 2009). The series, which aired from 1963 to the present, is a science fiction drama, focusing on advanced technology and extraterrestrial civilizations, but also on social issues and individual behavior, always presenting Earth as a central setting for adventures of the Doctor. Science and technology are major themes of the series, acting as catalysts for the stories and their characters. This essay will discuss morality and religion in Doctor Who, describing it alongside scientific and technological inventions. Its aim is to analyze the scientific themes of the programme, compare them to British social and cultural mores and identify a social impact of the programme. On the one hand, it will be argued that Doctor Who attempts to depict the Britain of its time, its moral values and its dominant social, political and cultural views. It will be shown that the series is about education and authority in matters of social behavior, the representation of social reality and human values, all derived from religious morality and codes of action typical of contemporary society. On the other hand, the essay will examine the show's scientific view on morality and religion. The science fiction genre of the program will be considered to challenge religious perspectives and provide social commentary.
