Essay / Importance of Collaborative Research - 971
Due to its many benefits, collaborative research has been greatly encouraged over the past decade. It helps researchers from different disciplines share their knowledge and resources. Additionally, the government has specifically created grants for collaborative research to incentivize collaborative research (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative). Besides the many benefits, collaborative research can also pose innumerable problems that need to be handled on a very diplomatic level. These problems become significantly more pronounced when research is carried out abroad. Many discoveries are the result of the collaborative work of peers from different cultural and ethical backgrounds. As technology and science reach their peak, international collaboration has increased significantly. Communication across the world is no longer a barrier, nor is transportation. What is missing, however, is education about other world cultures. This could avoid many problems that often plague the overseas research environment. Simple problems that are easy to overlook can become huge devastations if left unaddressed. Measurement systems are examples of this due to their inconsistency across the world. Corruption is very common in most countries around the world, as is underpayment, which can affect the accuracy of results and the length of searches. Additionally, terms vary across cultures and languages, causing extreme confusion. Problems with these and other sources have posed obstacles for international researchers for decades, but their late popularity has attracted the attention of governments. With this in mind, the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in conjunction with the University of Mi...... middle of article...... and the funds, but the authors should be those who put their intellectual knowledge to work (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative)*. Partners must not be exploited. Credit should be given to those who deserve it (Glew 282). Although this is not the primary purpose of reading peer-reviewed journals, great credit should be given to reports of this nature. The success of studying abroad relies on a team that is open-minded, patient, honest, selfless and, for those who are not native speakers, available to learn and understand the culture. Open and sincere communication throughout the research process is the key to success. No one should have to assume anything, everything should be clear and transparent; “the crucial point is to not assume anything and to put everything on the table to discuss as early as possible in the relationship” (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative).
