  • Essay / Gothicism In Désirée's Baby - 804

The passage says: “Désirée had not changed the thin white garment nor the slippers she wore”. I consider wearing something white to imply that someone or something is pure. The guilt that Armand had imposed on her made her think that she was a black person, a black soul. Again, her wearing white made it seem like she wasn't the one at fault in the story. People who read the story should feel some sympathy for her. Especially when her mental state was invaded by her husband's words. In the story, the passage states: “She disappeared among the slats and willows that grew thick along the banks of the deep, slow-moving bayou; and she didn't come back. » Implying that she just committed suicide so that she and perhaps her husband would not be embarrassed by the fact that she gave birth to a black part.
