  • Essay / Gods of Ancient Egypt - 775

Did you know that there were over 2,000 gods and goddesses in ancient Egypt? Some gods had human bodies and animal heads. When I read that, I was shocked! I never imagined there would be so many gods in Egypt. Plus, I found the idea of an animal head stuck on a human body disgusting! I just didn't believe it, so I decided to find out for myself. The ancient Egyptians were mostly polytheists, meaning they believed in multiple gods. When Akhenaten was pharaoh, the Egyptians were monotheists, meaning they worshiped only one god. He ended the worship of other gods and claimed that Aten, lord of all, was the only god in Egypt. The Egyptians did not like this idea, so on their own they became polytheists again. In Egypt, worshiping the gods was a large part of their lives. The ancient Egyptians worshiped the gods for several reasons, one being that the gods were often the ones who kept Egypt running smoothly. Additionally, Egyptians generally depended on the gods for good harvests, victory in a war, assistance in times of crisis, or other necessary assistance. Some gods were worshiped in large temples by pharaohs and priests, while other gods were worshiped in people's homes. Some gods were represented with a human body and an animal head. Most of the time, the animal and the god have something in common. For example, Anubis, the god of embalming, is depicted with a jackal's head due to his habits. One of the main reasons why the Egyptians even created a god of mummification was because jackals often roamed around tombs and tombs. They did not want the jackals to disturb the dead while they were in their afterlife, and preserving the body would keep it from decomposing...... middle of paper ...... man killed her husband and was trying to steal his money. Seth was outraged by this and insisted that the evil man die and his son inherit the money. He had been deceived, he himself had said that he had to give up the throne. Isis' magical skills were very useful and well-known in Egypt. She was also famous for being the most loving wife and mother. As you can see, the ancient Egyptians believed in thousands of gods. Without the gods, their lives would be miserable, if not non-existent! The gods gave them water from the Nile, sunlight, beauty and the basic things a person needs and wants. The gods were important and useful in their lives. The story of each god was interesting because it was unique and very detailed. I was amazed by some of their abilities. I hope to have more opportunities to study Egypt in the future.
