While children remain invested in their parents' happiness, each parent instead focuses on their own perspective of not making the necessary changes in balance. As Luke tries to integrate Isabel into the family, seeking balance and understanding in whatever capacity, he is met with resistance from Jackie. The children look to their mother for reassurance that roles are not being reassigned and that Jackie cannot be replaced as a mother. Still angry that he apparently tried to replace her in the eyes of their children, Jackie is unaware that by involving her daughter in unnecessary competitions with Isabel, she is straining an already very difficult relationship with her.
