Essay / Stereotypes in Advertising - 996
Advertising is a huge market that people all over the world use to help their company sell its products. In today's society there is a constant fight against stereotypes. In particular, the advertising world is known for stereotyping people based on their gender and religion, but primarily their gender. Hardees' new advert features a pretty young woman wearing an extremely revealing dress and she is sexually eating one of Hardees' new "wonderful" burgers. This ad is a great example of a problem that America as a whole is facing. Hardees has a history of attractive women participating in many of their advertisements. Starting with Danish model Nina Agdal, who advertises the famous fish sandwich, Playboy Mate Sarah Underwood, who advertises the "Memphis BBQ Thickburger", and Kate Upton, the 2012 Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, who promotes Hardees/Carl's southwest patty melt. All of this not only devalues women, but also does not sit well with young people and distorts Hardees' view of women as a whole. This ad is offensive to women and could potentially cause future problems for Hardees Corporation. The first problem with this sexist ad is that it devalues women as a whole and is too sexual. Since the advertising world is very sexist, it is dangerous for their company to promote an ad that risks offending the public. If a man sees an attractive, half-naked woman eating a thick, juicy hamburger in a television commercial, he will likely get a false impression of who a woman really is. With the advertising market aware that sexism was a major problem in the past, this creates a serious problem for women and especially young people. It's bad because... middle of paper ... the problem is that people don't realize what sexism represents. If we could reduce overly sexual elements in advertisements, viewers would have nothing left to say, which would make society a better place. As we can see, Hardees advertisement devalues women and portrays them in a negative way from people's point of view. Let's start by showing women as they are, not in a sexual way. Yes, a woman has breasts, but advertising should only focus on hamburgers and hamburgers. Portraying a woman in a different light causes stress and can lead to depression. Although the girl looks fit, it should be remembered that if she continues to eat unhealthy foods like Hardees, she will lose the "elastic body" image. Remember, a commercial like Hardees is great, but imagine if you were a father and your daughter was a sexist figure..
