  • Essay / The Prohibition Era - 1342

Prohibition was a very interesting era that lasted from 1919 to 1933 (Ian Tyrell). It was a time when crime was at its highest level. People were breaking the rules like never before. Drinking was a tradition that Americans have practiced for many generations. Banning this substance seemed to many an injustice. They felt like the government was taking away their rights. Banning this drink may have made the situation worse. Alcohol has been socially acceptable for many years. It is always used for ceremonies or celebrations. Without this substance, a party would never be a party. Prohibition was never going to work. Many Americans continued to drink even though it was prohibited. They went out of their way to get this drink. If you tell a person not to do something, they will do it. So if you tell Americans not to drink, eventually they will. I think it's just a human instinct for things that make you feel good. Many people feel that alcohol helps them. This can relieve stress and help you get rid of those negative thoughts. Prohibition was never going to work in the first place. The government was interfering in people's lives. It was supposed to be one of the most peaceful periods in American history. Alcohol was banned, so you'd think few Americans would go crazy. But things were getting out of control because of our need for alcohol. Many Protestants and women's organizations were against alcohol (Ian Tyrell). They had the impression that this liquid was Satan's drink. People would react to their actions by consuming this substance. Many workers also became drunk while working. The Woman's Christian Temperance Union also campaigned against alcohol (About.com). They thought husbands beat their wives because... middle of paper... something they should never have done. Things were going for the worst. People were dying and killing each other from alcohol. Prohibition reminds me of what America is today with marijuana. Trying to ban a substance is ineffective because it is unenforceable. Many people will always find a way to do it no matter what. Just like back then, people were willing to break the law to get a drink. So, on May 12, 1933, the 21st Amendment was passed to once again allow Americans to consume alcohol. Mississippi was one of the last states to repeal this law. On December 5, 1933, Prohibition officially ended. antyrrell.wordpress.com/alcohol-prohibition-in-the-usa/http://www.prohibitionrepeal.com/history/fastfacts.asp
