Gender Roles in SocietySuggested roles of all types set the stage for how human beings perceive their lives. Gender roles are one of the most dangerous roles facing society today. With all the controversy applied to the dominance of men against women in households and the workplace, there seems to be a debate one way or the other. In the essay “Men as Successful Objects,” author Warren Farrell explains this threat to society as a whole. Farrell explains the difference between men and women growing up and how they view their role in society. He justifies that this does not only appear in marriage, but from the earliest stages of life. Similarly, in the essay “Roles of Sexes,” real-life applications are explored in two different novels. The synthesis between these two essays proves how roles are prevalent in even the smallest part of a concept and how this is a relatively unavoidable topic. Warren Farrell is an educated man who focuses his attention on gender. In his essay “Men as Objects of Success,” he writes about gender roles in male-female relationships. He begins: “For thousands of years, marriages were about economic security and survival” (Farrell 185). The key word in this statement is “were.” This implies the fact that marriage has changed over the last century. He says that after the 1950s, marriage was more about what a man and woman got out of their relationship rather than simply the security of being married. Divorce rates increased and added to the tension over which gender held supremacy and what role individuals were expected to accept. “Inequality in the workplace” covered all conflicts related to “inequality within the home” (Farrell). Farrell draws attention to all ...... middle of paper ......o accept. They help define men versus women. Most of the time, these issues are taken lightly and go unnoticed until someone or a group pays attention to inequality and typical roles. It becomes interesting when roles are reversed in society to see how others react to these situations. Society seems to be more comfortable with women's success and less obsessed with women staying home to do the housework. Regardless of success, there is always a struggle for dominance. It also seems to depend on how children are raised and how hard these individuals strive to fulfill their specific role. It will be interesting to see, as society evolves over time, how defined gender roles will continue to change as well. Whether it's the conflict of success, supremacy, or the need for perfection, the roles will endure as they have from the beginning..
