The tragic events that occurred in Rwanda are largely unknown to Western civilization. Its tragic beginnings and suffering are often overlooked in world history. The accidental chain of events which led to the consequences of the genocide is still deplored today. From the vast machete massacres to the government ramifications after the genocide, the events of Rwanda must be remembered and should never be allowed to happen again. This should serve as a learning experience for the rest of the world about how one action can have unintended effects. For more than half a century of Rwanda's history, the Tutsi and Hutu tribes have had internal struggles for power. It was fueled by ethnic discrimination and persecution caused by European occupation. During World War I in 1894, Belgium occupied Rwanda as a colony and separated the Tutsi and Hutu into different classes. The Tutsi and Hutu were two people who shared the same background, they were cattle herders who were separated by name according to the number of cattle they owned. The Tutsi owned the most livestock and everyone else was Hutu. They lived in peace and there was no organized crime, judgment or clashes between people. But when Europeans first settled in Rwanda and saw these cattle herders, they established the categories Tutsi and Hutu as racial roles. The Germans viewed Tutsis as having more European characteristics, such as lighter skin or straighter noses, which was the first step towards the tragedy to come. The Germans then gave the Tutsi the role of leaders of the nation and peace that Rwanda once had. was no more. The Europeans further damaged people's way of life by giving the Tutsi identification documents to distinguish them from the Hutu and other smaller groups...... middle of paper ....... While There are over 130,000 suspects in Rwanda's prison, trails continue today and it is estimated that there are over a million solved cases. All of this horror, hardship and suffering was caused by a simple social class divide created by people who didn't really have a say in how these people should do it. lived their lives. This simple decision set off a chain of random events that led to another moment in history where humanity forgot its humanity. Human beings as a whole should never collectively allow mass machete genocide to happen so easily, or, should it happen, attempt to stop it before more people are needlessly killed . We should also learn to realize what impact our actions, our decisions and the effects of our judgment could bring to everything we do and remember Rwanda as a grim example of the severity of these effects...
