  • Essay / Racism and racism in Othello - 1363

The Elizabethan era was a forty-five year period of new thoughts and ideas. It was a time when he thrived with poetry, music and literature. Around this time, a famous poet named William Shakespeare appeared. He wrote many different stories, including “The Tragedy of Othello”. “The Tragedy of Othello” follows the story of Othello, a warrior in the Venetian army and follows what happens in his love life and his struggles throughout the story. Shakespeare depicts different images of discrimination against different ethnic minorities throughout the play. Also in the Elizabethan era there was racism and sexism towards different ethnic minorities and different genders. In "The Tragedy of Othello" we see parts of this with Iago because of some of his hatred towards Othello and how he sometimes ridiculed Othello. Brabantio also showed disdain towards Othello partly because of his color and because he felt betrayed towards him. Ethnic minorities in the Elizabethan era were treated very differently to white people at the time and the same goes for “The Tragedy of Othello”. The similarities between the two indicate the extent to which Shakespeare incorporated the realistic time period he was in and put it into his stories. This also shows that ethnic minorities were seen as different and lower class compared to the white race, otherwise known at the time as the superior race. A distinct view of racism against ethnic minorities is primarily against Othello. He was a well-respected general even though he was a Moor (person of African origin). However, once he came out of his secret marriage to Desdemona, everything changed and everyone had different opinions about him. It was basically like everyone...in middle of paper...was fighting different social classes against each other every time they sometimes went to the theater and how the seats in the theater were separated depending on the social class to which you belonged. bulk. William Shakespeare was a great poet who wrote many good stories and other poems. His dramatic story "The Tragedy of Othello" was probably one of the most tragic of all due to all the deceptive plots placed in between and the different stories that unfolded between the different characters. And although the Elizabethan era was an era of new English literature (poems, stories, etc.), few poets or even authors in other genres can live up to the standards that William Shakespeare set forth with its story of Othello being himself. esteem ended up getting the better of him because he didn't believe enough in himself and his wife Desdemona, thus creating a tragedy.
