  • Essay / Criminal sociology by Enrico Ferri - 1903

Criminal sociology (1905)In 1905, Enrico Ferri published another book entitled “Criminal sociology”. In this work, he discussed a wide range of problems he saw within the criminal justice system and crime as a whole at the time. Many of the topics he covered are still reflected today in the way we think about crime. He explained how societal issues could affect crime outcomes of the time, he divided all offenders into five different categories which he discussed in depth, and took an in-depth look at whether a lower prison population actually shows that there is less crime (Ferri). When he questioned whether the decrease in the prison population was really due to a decrease in crime, he looked at what sentences were given for certain crimes in the past and what were these penalties when he noticed the reduction. He saw that this was not an indication of a decrease in crime among the population. What he found was that penalties and costs had been reduced. Another important topic he talked about was the difference between a habitual offender and an occasional offender. To elaborate, he stated that there are actually five types of criminals, those who are born with it, the criminally insane, what he calls "criminals of passion", occasional offenders and repeat offenders (F... .. middle of paper......Logical and psychological factors.
