The day Montag misses work, Beatty, Montag's fire chief, shows up at his house. Beatty tells Montag that it's normal for a firefighter to feel this way, and he explains why the books became banned. He said groups would objectify books that offended them and writers would write similar books to avoid offending people. But that wasn't enough and the company decided to get rid of them completely by burning them, rather than maintaining a permanent conflict. Beatty tells Montag that he has 24 hours to read his books and return them, so Montag begins a long night of reading. Frustrated with reading, Montag asks Mildred for help, but she prefers to watch television and does not understand why he would risk reading books. He remembers meeting Faber and an English teacher at the park, and he realizes that Faber can help him understand the books. He goes to see Faber and he tells Montag that the value lies in the awareness they have. He tells Montag that he not only needs to read the books, but he needs the freedom to act on what they have. Faber agrees that he will help Montag read, and they hatch a plan to destroy the status quo. Faber will start reproducing books and Montag will put them in firemen's houses to discredit them. Montag returns home and two of Mildred's friends come to watch television. Mildred and her friends discuss the war that is about to happen, which angers Montag. He begins reading “Dover Beach” by Matthew Arnold. The women are disturbed and leave to file a report against Montag. Montag returns to work and gives his book to Beatty, and becomes confused when Beatty tells him quotes from famous books. He does this to prove to Montag that the books are morbid and cause too much conflict. Suddenly, the alarm goes off, only to discover that it is Montag's house. When Montag arrives, he sees Mildred getting into a taxi with her bags, and he concludes that she has reported him. Beatty tells Montag that he must burn down the house himself, and once he does, he is placed under arrest. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Get a custom paper now from our expert writers.
