Hodgkin's lymphoma is a form of cancer of the lymphatic system. This type of lymphoma originates from white blood cells and spreads to all lymph nodes in the body. The cause of Hodgkin's lymphoma is unknown and is sometimes discovered by chance. This disease is usually treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and, if detected at an early stage, the patient has a good chance of being completely cured. According to Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (2013), Hodgkin's lymphoma is "a malignant lymphoma whose pathological hallmark is Reed-Sternberg (RS) cell." This lymphoma usually starts in a single lymph node (especially in the neck, armpit, groin, or near the aorta) and spreads to adjacent nodes if not recognized and treated early. (p. 1136). Hodgkin's lymphoma was first discovered in 1832 by Tom Hodgkins, who was the first to notice the characteristic deformities of the lymphatic system. Hodgkin's lymphoma is more common in Caucasians, young adults (15 to 30 years), and older adults (50 years and older) (Roddle, Peggs, 2009, p. 208). Although the cause of the disease has not yet been discovered, it has been “associated with Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection in 40 to 50% of cases” (Roddle, Peggs, 2009, p. 208 ). The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies Hodgkin's lymphoma into two different groups: nodular lymphocyte-predominant lymphoma (NLPHL) and classic HL (cHL). NLPHL develops slowly, is found primarily in men, and accounts for approximately 5% of all HL cases. It is characterized by L&H cells and a different antigenic profile (Roddle, Peggs, 2009, p. 208). In contrast, CHL, the most common subtype, represents almost 80% of diagnosed cases.
