  • Essay / Education: A Path to Personal Reward and Power

Most of my community service time has been spent assisting a group that specializes in helping children with autism. The Groden Center has graciously allowed me to contribute to some of their programs. By helping out with Special Olympics, Winter Holidays, and arts and crafts, I was able to make an effort to make sure everything ran smoothly. A long-term service I provided with the Groden Center stipend was assisting the speech therapist. Every Friday for a number of weeks, I collected data analyzing the growth of autistic children with language development, organized files, and worked with worksheets. My help made it possible to complete the work that needed to be done each week so that it was less complicated to complete. On the other hand, I performed side community service tasks such as helping with barn maintenance, arranging visits for new eighth graders, and working with the master gardeners at the URI. All of the experiences I have chosen to contribute to my community service transcript have been for the good of the community rather than to impress a university. I am proud to help my community with activities that are close to my heart and I know that I will obtain skills and characteristics throughout my life based on the responsibilities I assume. Personally and socially, I am now more open, charismatic and extroverted.
