  • Essay / Mark Anthony - 1547

When someone's close friend commits murder and he or she cannot point the finger, literally, at the killer because he or she promised not to . What can he do? Well, Mark Antony accused Brutus, the murderer, using words, also called rhetoric, as his weapon of choice. At first, Brutus murders Caesar, a close friend of Antony, for fear that Caesar would become heir emperor of Rome and become a corrupt ruler. When he assassinates Caesar, Brutus uses rhetoric and figures of speech to win people's hearts, discredit Caesar's reputation, and perhaps gain some credibility for himself. When this happened, Brutus announced that he would allow Antony to make a speech for the people after Brutus had won over the crowd. In Brutus' speech, he explains to the people why Caesar was better dead than alive. This reason given by Brutus was that Caesar was too ambitious and was not cut out to be a leader. Well, in Antony's speech he did what he promised, not to mention killing Caesar, but he wanted his fellow Romans to bring justice to Caesar and prove that Caesar was not ambitious but noble. Both men used rhetoric superbly and were similar in that they both wanted to take control of their fellow Romans and either indicted or defended Caesar's credibility. However, in Antoine's speech, his light uses of figures of repetition, such as the use of the antistrophe, the figures of address, the rhetorical question and the figures of contrast, the use of irony, lead people to the truth and turn them against Brutus by saying what was noble and ambitious. Antony's speech to the people was phenomenal, as he first established why he had come. He came to look for his good friend Caesar. As Antoine began his speech, he did not discredit Brut...... middle of paper ......uh the crowd with examples of irony and the power of repetitions like those above. After great uses of irony, question rhetoric, and light use of antistrophe, Antony told the people who murdered their beloved Caesar. Brutus' mistake was to vaguely argue that the people of Rome barely had an understanding of Caesar. Brutus mentions how ambitious Caesar was and why he deserves to die. However, in Mark Antony's speech, he proved to the people why Brutus was wrong. Antony told the people that Caesar was sad. Antony told the people that Caesar was noble. And finally, Antony told the people that Brutus was ambitious and immoral. Ultimately, Antony convinced the people of Rome using figures of speech. Figures of speech are so powerful that even with odds against anyone, they can turn the tide, like Mark Antony did against Brutus..
