Giving or Receiving GiftsFor social service professionals, it is very important that we understand our boundaries when it comes to giving or receiving gifts. If we start accepting or receiving gifts, that could potentially cause an ethical problem, but if we try to be this super ethical person, we could potentially harm our therapeutic relationship. What is recommended is that each situation be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine whether it is appropriate to give or receive gifts. According to the AAMFT (2001), “marriage and family therapists do not give or receive from clients (a) gift of substantial value. value or (b) gifts that impact the integrity or effectiveness of the therapeutic relationship. One of the things we need to consider is the motive behind the gifts and why the advisor accepted or declined the gifts. Would accepting more expensive gifts result in inappropriate and unethical behavior? Therefore, we must be careful when making the decision to accept or refuse a gift. The latest version of the ACA Ethics (2005) has been added as a new standard for receiving gifts. It says that “Advisors understand the challenges of accepting gifts from clients and recognize that in some cultures, small gifts are a sign of respect and gratitude. When determining whether or not ...... middle of paper ...... reacted towards a customer or vice versa, however, it is one of those boundaries that should never be crossed between a social service worker and his/her client, nor should we have business dealings, accept gifts or barter. However, social relationships are not always seen as negative, but we still need to maintain boundaries. Let's keep in mind that in any field we choose to work in, there is always a code of ethics to follow or consult with questions. concern regarding a particular behavior or regarding how the social service professional should behave at any time. The human services professional is responsible for maintaining and knowing the policies relating to their area of concentration.
