  • Essay / A Conceptual Analysis of Diversity - 1417

Diversity has many definitions but only one true meaning. This concept analysis is dedicated to exploring the broader meaning of diversity through active concepts regarding term usage and current literature research to support understanding and relevance of the term itself. Search terms: diversity, ethnic variety and variationIntroduction: DefinitionDictionary definitions as the term “Diversity” is quite similar in nature. The American Heritage Dictionary describes the following: “The fact or quality of being diverse; difference” and also “A point or respect by which things differ… variety or multiformity”. Merriam-Webster describes the definition as “…Being composed of different elements” and goes on to state “the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization.” This definition shows much more respect for multicultural people. Dictionary.com describes another angle by saying “A point of difference.” The Encarta online dictionary has, in my opinion, one of the best sets of definitions. They state “a variety of something like opinion, color or style” and “…a socio-economic and gender variety, in a group, society or institutions…a company committed to diversity” . After exploring the different definitions, I noticed that the terms can be interchangeable, but the words are used laterally. When we discuss related terms (synonyms and antonyms), we can begin to construct our own definition, which I will discuss later in this article. . I will list some synonyms related to diversity. Since there are multiple results, I will list the related terms that seem to best articulate the word diversity.
