Essay / Summary of All Quiet On The... by Erich Maria Note
He said he felt disconnected and displaced in civilian life after the war. Like a multitude of others who served in World War I, Remarque felt misunderstood by those who did not serve once reintegrated into society. Despite this, Note finished his studies and began a short career as a teacher. Without a steady income after that career ended, Remarque began giving piano lessons, writing reviews for local newspapers, and working on novels (young adult authors and artists). During this period, Erich Maria Note worked on numerous novels, but could not seem to escape the unforgettable images of death and destruction he witnessed on the battlefield. For this reason, he began writing a novel based on these experiences which would soon become his most famous novel published in 1929, eleven years after the end of World War I (Fishel). Note used his experiences in the German trenches of the First World War and his estrangement from post-war society to influence the writing of All Quiet on the Western Front and, as a result, many aspects of his life were reflected in his book.
