    Contributions of Ancient GreeceIt is always important to look to the past in order to move toward the future. This happened during the formation of Western society, and specifically the formation of American society. Greek culture has served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life, including government, architecture, mathematics, and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad foundation on which to build our society. In Pericles' time, the ideal form of government was considered one formed by all citizens, regardless of their wealth or social status. This was called democracy, literally meaning "government of the people" [Document 3.] This government favored the many rather than the few. Athens was a direct democracy, meaning that every citizen participated in debates. Western civilization has used this philosophy of government by many and created an indirect democracy in which citizens elect officials to pass and enforce laws. Geometry, the cornerstone of modern civilization, also has its beginnings in ancient Greece. Euclid, a mathematician, formed numerous geometric proofs and theories [Document 5]. He also came to one of the most important mathematical discoveries, Pi. This number indicated the ratio of the diameter to the circumference of a circle. Greek architecture formed its own conventions in the ancient world, buildings in Greece were constructed according to meticulous mathematical design. Large buildings were believed to be symmetrical and perfectly proportioned [Document 7]. Another important aspect of ancient Greek architecture is the extensive use of columns. There were three basic types used, Doric which were simple capitals, Ionic in which capitals were fashioned after ram's horns, and Corinthian which were made to reflect acanthus leaves..
