Essay / A Comparison of Cinderella and Disney’s “Cinderella”
“Cinderella” is a children’s fairy tale that we all love and admire. It tells the story of tragedy, love and happily ever after. If you were to ask a child what “Cinderella” was about, they would most likely tell you about the Disney version of true love and happiness. The original fairy tale was told in poem form, written by Anne Sexton. Unlike Disney, Anne Sexton puts a twist on this classic story and turns it into a dark tragedy. His version of “Cinderella” is a retelling of the Grimm tale, not the Disney one. Surprisingly, the two stories are completely different. Anne Sexton is a well-known writer of the 20th century, still known for many of her poems and stories. Her poems take a more personal, often feminist, look at things. Topics such as depression, unrest and even death are often found in his poems. Cinderella, as told by Sexton, involves all three of these things. Disney's version, on the other hand, modernizes the original Grimm's tale and transforms it into a romantic and charming fairy tale. Anne Sexton's poem "Cinderella" begins with several scenarios about people who go from being unhappy and poor to being extremely lucky and wealthy later in life. After her mother's death, Cinderella is made a housewife by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. Her sisters receive many gifts and luxurious items, while Cinderella receives a small twig and nothing else from her father. Cinderella places the twig on her mother's grave and from there it becomes a magical tree. After that, the dove provides her with everything she wants. The Prince's ball lasts three days and the dove provides Cinderella with all the items necessary to attend the ball. The last night of the middle of paper......more unrealistic. Disney's version tells a romantic and hopeless story of "Cinderella" and a "happily ever after." The poem and the story have two completely different meanings and for good reason. Anne Sexton incorporates her thoughts on stereotypes and feminism into her poem and also highlights a style of writing that could be considered macabre and dark. Disney, on the other hand, transforms the dark fairy tale into one full of magic and true love. When I think of “Cinderella,” my mind automatically thinks of the Disney interpretation. I grew up reading this and honestly never knew there was an original. After reading both versions of “Cinderella,” I can see the deeper meaning in each of them. Anne Sexton is about her own life and struggles, while the Disney tale is more about fun and a way to escape the reality of our world..
