  • Essay / The history of the hour and the yellow wallpaper Analysis

“The Story of the Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gillman are seen from the perspective of a 19th-century woman. They showed the problems with how they were confined in the house. That they should stay at home and let the husband earn the household income. These stories are both written by American women and explain how their marriages came to be. Their husbands were very controlling and treated them more like children rather than their wives. In the 19th century, their behavior was considered normal. In “The Story of the Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the two women explore their issues surrounding the desire to break free from their husbands’ control. These women did not know how to act when their husbands were not around. They had to be controlled because they had no control over themselves. If their husbands had not had control over them, they would have lost all control. In both stories, when the husband is out of line, he is not of sound mind. They always had someone watching over them as if they were children. When left alone, they talk to each other and lose their minds. In "The Yellow Wallpaper", she suffered from mental illness and could not be left alone. She could not function according to the daily routine. She said her husband did not treat her like a wife, but rather like one of his patients. She was treated this way only because she behaved like a patient and not like a wife. The only way to help her was to treat her like a patient so she could get better. In “The Story of the Hour,” she wanted her freedom so badly. She was also not of sound mind. She had a heart problem and had to be treated delicately. She had a controlling husband who... middle of paper ... her husband comes to get her because she locked herself in her room. He was so afraid she would do something crazy. When she locked herself in her room, she wanted to remove all the wallpaper from the walls, so that the woman would be freed from the bars of wallpaper that held her captive. “The Story of the Hour” by Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gillman “The Yellow Wallpaper,” both women explore their issues surrounding the desire to break free from their husbands’ control. They feel they need to be free. Both women are not of sound mind and go a little crazy when they have some sort of freedom from everything that traps them. In both stories, when the women are left alone, they talk about everything that is happening around them. When their husbands are not around, they seem to lose control and need to be monitored often..
