Essay / Agenda Cycle in Jharkhand - 848
2. Agenda cycle:-2.1. Identification of Problems:- In Jharkhand, the problems lie on several fronts, but the two most important problems are:- a) Mining:- Jharkhand is one of the most mineral-rich states of India . Some statistics show that around 40% of India's total mineral reserves are found in Jharkhand. One can find all the biggest names of the industry in Jharkhand like Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Arcelor-Mittal etc. But in terms of human development index, Jharkhand remains one of the least developed states. The fundamental reason for this irony is the overexploitation of mines and the fact that only a few benefit to the maximum. The people whose land is exploited are the ones who benefit the least. Some problems that may arise due to mining activities are:-i) Formation of sinkholes and land subsidence:-When coal is extracted from the mines, the pillars support the roof of the mines. But once mining is complete, it must be filled with sand to protect against any mine collapse. But this is generally not done and land collapses can occur. Many areas of Jharkhand are facing the threat of land subsidence, development of fissures, land collapse and formation of deep holes in the areas. ii) Soil Erosion: - One of the major impacts of mining takes place on soil erosion. Massive deforestation and strip mining also contribute to soil erosion. The three main factors contributing to soil erosion, water erosion, wind erosion and human-induced erosion, occur due to strip mining and deforestation. iii) Impact on forest:- Mining will definitely reduce the forest cover of any state. The same thing is also happening in Jharkahnd. According to the Forest Survey of India's State of Forest Report, in an assessment published in 1997, Jharkhand...... middle of paper ......ater.Adityapur Dam, Jamshedpur 15 feet 35 feet 20 feet less than the previous year Deep water crisis. This is a major problem because rivers are the main source of drinking water. Here is the status of major rivers of Jharkhand:-
