Essay / An Analysis of Orca Encounters by Isabelle Groc
This is a massive situation that needs to be permanently corrected. Aquariums around the world keep many sea creatures in captivity, and orcas are one of them. They are not only kept for show, but trainers also teach them to perform in aquariums for the public. John Jett and Jeffery Ventre, authors of “Captive Killer Whale (Orcinus Orca) Survival” talk about the cruelty and capture procedures that occur in captivity. “Killer whales (Orcinus orca) were first taken into captivity in 1961 and are now found in theme parks around the world.” Research has shown us that 55 years have passed and we still hold orcas in captivity. How come nothing has changed even though most humans know it's wrong? As the whales are held hostage, they find it extremely difficult to survive. John Jett and Jeffery Ventre say: "Despite the success of breeding killer whales in captivity since 1985, there are growing concerns about their welfare in captivity, which often includes claims of poor survival." These theme parks where orcas are held captive are increasing due to humans raising them by hand, but they clearly aren't treating them seriously and because of that, places like this should be shut down.
