Imagine living in a country that has 76% of all serial killers in the world. The United States is that country. 84% of serial killers are white, 16% are black. Women represent 64% of the total victims. Only 10% of all serial killers are women (“Serial Killer Statistics”). Miyuki Ishikawa, a midwife in the 1940s, was one of these ten percent. She helped the mother give birth, but when the parents could no longer take care of their children, they entrusted them to Ishikawa. In turn, she couldn't afford them. She would neglect them, abuse them and leave them to die. Ishikawa tried to receive money for her actions, but all she caused was the Japanese government considering legalizing abortion ("Top 10 Prolific Serial Killers"). Abuse, rape, and murder have been increasingly common since the early 1400s. The rate of women being abused, raped, and murdered is at an all-time high. The percentage of women who have been victims of domestic violence is 25%. High school girls who have been physically or sexually assaulted represent 14%. Girls who were raped by their boyfriend, family or stranger between the ages of 14 and 17 account for 38%. More than 7% of murder victims are killed by their boyfriends. (“Domestic Violence and Abuse Statistics”) In the past 12 months, 580 women were murdered in the Los Angeles area. This represents an average of 48 murders per month. Between 2000 and 2010, there were 10 unsolved murders. One of these unsolved murders occurred in 2008 against a police officer (“LA Murders and Homicide”). Having unsolved cases in the Los Angeles area is not very common. There is a murder that is one of the oldest unsolved murders in the history of Los Angeles: it is Elizabeth Short (“Black Dahlia Biography”).
