  • Essay / Dickens's Depiction of Pip and Magwitch - 1526

Dickens makes the reader feel sorry for Pip describing his as "a little bundle of shivers that begins to cry". This makes us feel sorry for Pip, because he is shown as "little", i.e. helpless and he is crying and cold, showing that he is visibly upset and alone. Dickens makes us feel sympathy for Pip because the fact that he has to make assumptions about what his parents were like by reading their headstones shows that he is an orphan and didn't even know his parents . "As I have never seen my father or my mother, nor have I ever seen any resemblance to either of them. My first ideas of their appearance were unreasonably derived from their tombstones. This also shows Pip as a child, as he draws an immature conclusion about his parents, through the fonts on their tombstones Pip mentions all of his siblings' names, which helps us become more emotionally attached and sympathize with him. .In the 19th century it was not uncommon for a child to die at birth, so if Dickens wanted to keep the audience interested he had to make it more radical so Dickens shows Pip standing with the graves of all his brothers. shows Pip as very alone and helpless. Magwitch's language is presented in a less intellectual way than Pips wrote Magwitch's speech in non-standard English, this helps us feel what the character is like. that Pips' language is very short and stuttering, which also helps the reader to relate better to the characters. Dickens's stories were intended to be read aloud to large audiences, and he went on reading tours and performed at public performances. Dickens used non-standard English in his writing to give more personality to the characters. Dickens's writing style is different...... middle of paper ......ise and act kindly towards Magwitch. This makes the reader understand that Pip has become one of the stranded upperclassmen; who only care about their well-being and that of others who are richer than them. By analyzing this book, I learned a lot about what happened in the 19th century. I discovered that at that time, it was much more difficult to break free from classes. If you are born rich, you will die rich, if you are born poor, you will die poor. In the 19th century, when you were born poor, it was very difficult to do something, because it was difficult to go to school and you ended up doing the family job. For Pip to be engaged with such wealth in comparison today would be like winning the lottery! So for Pip, having the chance to acquire a huge amount of wealth is truly the best thing that could have happened..
