Detroit Diesel Corporation manufactures diesel and alternative fuel engines for trucks, buses, commercial and recreational watercraft, military and more. This is how Detroit Diesel has progressed over the years with engines and the help of other distributors and dealers. The story of Detroit Diesel began in 1938, as World War II intensified. The same year, General Motors created the GM Diesel division, the ancestor of Detroit Diesel. It was an epic era when the tradition of strength, quality and reliability was born. (Detroit Diesel) After the war ended, GM Diesel recognized the growing opportunity in the over-highway truck market. In 1957, GM Diesel released the 57 and 71 series for on- and off-road use. They also began to focus on developing a global distribution network of independent, authorized distributors and resellers to provide parts and services. In 1965, GM Diesel became the Detroit Diesel Engine division. In 1970, General Motors consolidated the company with the Allison Division's closely related transmission and gas turbine businesses, forming the Detroit Diesel Allison Division.
