    Carl and I have been through a lot together. Training, deployment, heartbreak, losses, promotions and achievements, just to name a few. He was always there for me if I ever needed a shoulder to lean on, someone to listen to, or a kick in the behind. I did my best to reciprocate. Carl, myself and four others in our small group of friends built a strong bond during our short time together in Germany and Iraq. I was deeply saddened by the day I had to leave Germany and this extraordinary group of people. But that was life in the army. I had lost contact with Carl for almost a year until I found him again through social media. We chatted from time to time to see how each other was doing. Then one morning in the summer of 2009, I received a call from another friend in the group with devastating news: Carl had committed suicide. I didn't want to believe her. My friend repeated her statement and I fell to the ground, completely in shock. I couldn't believe what I heard. I never thought Carl would do something like this. I don't think anyone around us thought their life would be over....
