Essay / envy - 736
We have all had that feeling of envy, the strong desire to get or want something that someone else has. Whether it's someone's character traits, status, abilities, or circumstances, we've all had this feeling at least once. Envy is a curse for us human beings, although being envious is quite ugly, but also very blinding. Feeling envious allows us to feel and want what someone else had because we, however, have some insecurity about the exact thing we desire; we never see the great things we possess and the qualities that are unique to us. “But that’s what everyone wants. This is the dirty secret spread around the world. It is the unspoken desire of the tides in every room and every street. It is the unspoken, silent whisper… millions and millions of people desperately yearn to stop being what they are and to be beautiful” (1108). In this piece “Beauty” by Jane Martin, we see how envy takes over and blocks our positive vision of ourselves. We all have our own opinions on what it means to be beautiful, we see right away that Carla is a beautiful model, she says to Bethany “Bethany, my dear, I have three model calls. I meet Ralph Lauren! »(1106). We immediately get the impression that Carla is a beautiful girl because she meets a famous modeling company, Ralph Lauren. We quickly see what Bethany's definition of beauty is: “You are the center of every moment of your life. People are watching. Men flock. I saw they were offering you discounts on makeup for no reason. Parents treat beautiful children better. Studies show that your income increases. You can have sex whenever you want. Men must know me. It takes up to a year. I am continually excited” (1108). Bethany Clearing declares the things she sees in the car... middle of paper... what she wants. It's better than beauty for me; it's better than brains for you. Different problems” (1109). We always want what we can't have and we don't realize that everyone has their own struggles and insecurities. No one is perfect even though it may seem that way on the outside, what happens on the inside is a different situation. Overall, we all felt some degree of envy, it's human nature and it's something everyone experiences in their lives. We shouldn't let envy ruin our self-esteem and blind us to the most important things. Instead, we should embrace our own unique beauty and let it shine through. Overall, the author described the main theme of envy over and over again and the resolution was just the realization that envy changes us and makes us different. “Envy comes from people’s ignorance or lack of confidence in their own gifts.” -Jean Vanier
