The Rainforest Alliance is an organization that aims to conserve the variety of plant and animal life around the world. It was founded in 1986, which is 28 years ago; its current president is Tensie Whelan who has worked for the Alliance since 1990. She published one of the first books on ecological tourism, in 1991 with Island Press. She has been recognized as one of the "100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics" by Ethisphere for many years, was the recipient of the Wall Street Journal/Winning Workplaces "Top Small Workplace Award" for Rainforest Alliance in 2008, and the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2012. They work around the world to make agriculture, forestry, and travel more socially responsible and better for the environment. They do this by helping communities who live off the land using appropriate land management methods. These ensure the preservation of the environment and wildlife, as well as the treatment of workers and families with respect. They also help businesses sell their sustainability efforts and work with tourism businesses to help them introduce methods that leave little impact on the environment and help local economies. Rainforest Alliance has made various achievements regarding the impact it has had on the environment. They have helped improve various wildlife habitats, reduce invasive species and prevent wildfires. In El Salvador, it was found that migratory birds prefer Rainforest Alliance certified farms over others, as these farms protect different wildlife migration routes; as well as in the countries more than five hundred different species of birds.
