Essay / Importance of reflection in nursing - 1530
Especially since nurses, as part of their daily work, must be able to act autonomously and make appropriate clinical judgments (9). Reflection can be helpful in making sense of difficult situations because it allows one to clarify the situation for oneself and the result is having a different perspective that allows nurses to improve their clinical judgment (2). Therefore, it is imperative that nurses engage in lifelong thinking that recognizes its value for professional growth and development and improving the quality of patient care (7). The Gibb Thinking Model, for example, is a great tool that nurses can use daily to improve these skills. Reflective writing in nursing is part of both theory and practice (10). Early in their nursing education and career, nurses learn to ask patients many open-ended questions and engage in meaningful, thought-provoking dialogue (7). Nurses can continue to ask these open, thoughtful questions and relate them to their critical decision-making and standards of patient care (7). Nurses must continue this inner dialogue to promote positive development, both professionally and personally.
